All-Star weekend and the Garden

February 15th, 2009

//Recent performances at the Garden have cemented its reputation as the greatest basketball court in the world.  There is little question that every player in the NBA would welcome a move to NY at some point in their career.  The question however is whether a free agent is willing to leave 30 million dollars on the table in a max contract with their native club?  Solution?  Do the Vince!   Get your native team to max you out, start telling your opponent what plays you are running, get your mom a plush parking spot with the players, fly into the country just before tip-off of the biggest playoff game of your team’s existence,  and then force a trade by not trying anymore.
The difference between Coaches K and D is pretty enormous.  Duke plays with a discipline which allows it to compete on any night with any team.  It has been proven in recent Olympics, that some of those international teams must be taken seriously, and any USA team will require that discipline.  If Lebron and Bosh are in New York in 2010 and win a title… maybe.
In order to truly gauge Vince’s value, you need only speak to the fans in Toronto.  He has also been voted as the most over-rated player in the league, by his peers.  It is surprising that the Spurs would be interested in Vince, especially for the playoffs?

Could Shaq finish the season with the Lakers?  If he did, they would win the title.  The real question however is how things in Phoneix have gotten so bad so fast… that everybody wants out?  Is it Porter?  Is it Kerr?  Maybe it’s Nash?

Sounding like a man with a plan, LeBron James hopes to join forces with fellow All-Star Chris Bosh when the pair become free agents in 2010. The only question is, where? Friday, James didn’t exactly disagree with the idea that he and Bosh could wind up in New York. “I would definitely love to play with Chris Bosh,” James said during the Eastern Conference All-Star team’s media session. “Being around him last summer (in the Olympics), I got to see how smart he is. His basketball IQ is unbelievable. He’s a very, very good player.” NY Daily News

“I don’t know. … I don’t know,” James said, chuckling, when asked about a scenario that would bring him and Bosh to the Garden. “I’m very happy with the team I’m on right now. We’re playing great basketball. The Cavaliers have been great to me. So I have no reason to even think about leaving, right at this point.” NY Daily News
U.S. basketball managing director Jerry Colangelo told The Post David Lee is on his radar as a 2012 Olympian and said Mike D’Antoni would be considered as Team USA head coach if Duke’s Mike Krzyzewkski passes. Colangelo said Lee likely will be invited this July to Las Vegas after summer league as part of a 24-player pool of young standouts “to keep the pipeline going.” Colangelo will select from that young group a roster for the 2010 World Championships. NY Post

The Pistons are among a handful of teams interested in acquiring All-Star Amare Stoudemire from Phoenix, which is asking for at least one expiring contract. Detroit can deliver Rasheed Wallace and his $13.68 million contract that comes off the books this summer. Michigan Live
What’s somewhat surprising, though, according to league sources, is that the leading team in the hunt to acquire Carter is one that would not seem to be a natural fit: San Antonio. “They would have to package a lot of salaries,” an Eastern Conference team official said. “But as long as they don’t have to give up any of their Big Three (Tim Duncan, Manu Ginobili and Tony Parker), it seems like that’s the most likely spot for Vince.” Sporting News
According to various league officials and player agents at the scene, the Nets have spoken to numerous teams to gauge Carter’s value, but the most likely scenario — as of Friday night — was a complicated 4-for-1 deal with San Antonio that would bring back two young pieces and two players the Nets would probably let go. In this scenario, which was reported last Friday on NJ.com, sharp-shooter Roger Mason and rookie point guard George Hill would come to New Jersey, along with center Fabricio Oberto and Bruce Bowen. Newark Star-Ledger

The NBA’s Rules and Competition Committee met Friday and approved a rule change that would disallow baskets if it was determined after the play that the team scoring the basket had six men on the court, CBSSports.com has learned. The NBA Board of Governors will vote on the recommendation next week, and if approved by owners, the rule will be implemented for the rest of this season. CBS Sports

The change was brought to the attention of the committee – comprised of current and former general managers, coaches, and players – in response to a game Dec. 30 in which Portland scored a basket with six men on the court against Boston. Under the old rule, the referees were permitted to assess a technical foul, but couldn’t disallow the basket. The technical foul will still be assessed, but any points scored while the extra man was on the court will be taken off the scoreboard. CBS Sports

Amare Stoudemire thinks he is going to be traded. But he can’t be 100 percent sure. “I would say it’s 60-40,” Stoudemire said Friday afternoon. “Who knows? They might keep me.” Stoudemire wore a mischievous smile as he spoke of the Suns keeping him, seeming to indicate that he’d be pretty surprised if he were not moved by Thursday’s trading deadline. Sporting News

But, later, Stoudemire explained that the Suns’ choice of direction did not make sense to him. “I don’t understand it,” he said. “They’re doing this because they want to fix the team. So you’re talking about trading a young All-Star big man. How is that rebuilding? There seems to be two different directions here. Is it about money? Or is it about making the team better?” Sporting News

In Toronto, the Raptors repeatedly have denied that they’d consider trading big man Chris Bosh. But, Bosh says, he is well aware of the chatter. “Of course you hear things,” Bosh said. “But I like talking about basketball. I don’t like talking about trades and free agency and all of that. I am just not interested.” Sporting News

Amare Stoudemire’s agent: “I feel he’s a (maximum-salary) player,” Grantham said. “A place that may be a real good deal for them may not be the best place for us. In that case, we would not be interested in signing an extension. I would think most teams would not want to rent him for a year and a half. They would want him to sign for more years and know that he’s interested in staying.” Arlington Heights Daily Herald
When told of Jackson’s comments, O’Neal laughed heartily and said, “He’s right,” then sent another compliment Jackson’s way. “He (Jackson) was great. He let us do what we did. His thing was, we’re winning and we won the championship, so he’s not going to mess with it. That’s what it was about.” There is a chance of course, this is just another marketing campaign. Or, that Jackson was a bit weary from the Lakers’ recent travels. He was never wild about the idea of having to be part of the party during this four-day break, after all. LA Daily News
Oklahoma City’s Kevin Durant scored a Rookie Challenge-record 46 points to lead the NBA’s sophomores to a 122-116 victory over the rookies on Friday night. Durant shattered the record of 36 set by Phoenix’s Amare Stoudemire as a sophomore in 2004. Durant helped hold off a late charge by the rookies with a three-point play, an emphatic dunk and two free throws in the final minutes. AP/San Francisco Chronicle
A 17-point play in a boys basketball game in Sacramento was erased this week after the league heard an appeal and agreed that the referees in the game had assessed too many technical fouls and awarded too many free throws. Ahead by 5 points in the game’s final seconds, Bella Vista High School appeared to have the game won. But a flagrant foul on a player from Rio Americano High School with 12.3 seconds left sent players and coaches from both teams’ benches onto the floor. NY Times

Tell me how that taco tastes?

January 23rd, 2009

//
Marc’s future endeavors are likely to include house hunting in Toronto.   While D’Antoni was forbidden from rolling up into the Collangelo fold, no such stipulations exist stopping this former Suns assistant.

There are a few reasons why concealed weapons aren’t allowed…Mike.  We can start with the usual suspects like Stephen Jackson and Jamal Tinsley, but lets not forget all-stars like Wince Carter, Paul Pierce and even Shaquille… who are all  licensed to carry a concealed firearm - legally.

Alonzo and Shaquille are a lot alike.  Yes they were interchangeable during Miami’s miracle title run atop the back of D-Wayde… but they also share a certain socialized characteristic commonly born among gifted physical specimens.  Imagine riding the team bus back to middle school following another blow-out victory lead by your 6 foot 8 inch grade 7 center.  He starts telling jokes.   His jokes aren’t funny, but you laugh.  Meet Alonzo, Shaq, and their extremely warped sense of reality.  It’s not their fault, society made them that way.  Unfortunately, we have to listen to them and their idiotic rhetoric even as they struggle through the decline and completion of their gifted careers.
The only thing that Shaquille ever invented was taco neck syndrome and that YouTube musical gem  - ‘Tell me how my Ass Tastes!@”

“We wish Marc all the best in his future endeavors,” general manager Chris Wallace said in a statement. “He gave his all to the organization while serving as head coach and represented the Grizzlies with class and a high level of professionalism.” AP/NBA.com

It’s a good thing Madison Square Garden has security. Otherwise, Nate Robinson might have felt Mike D’Antoni’s wrath Wednesday night. Robinson was hit with a technical during the Knicks’ win over the Suns as he came off the bench and stepped onto the court and taunted Amare Stoudemire. “To be honest with you, that’s why you don’t have concealed weapons, ’cause I’d have shot him at that point,” D’Antoni said yesterday. NY Post

Mourning once demanded a female reporter, (now-Sacramento Bee columnist Ailene Voisin) who wasn’t even talking to him, leave the locker room while he changed clothes. Voisin told him off and things got ugly fast. A day later the league demanded Mourning apologize. All of us who’d faced the wrath of Zo enjoyed hearing that lesson in manners and humility. Charlotte Observer Blog

“He’s a good player, but everything he’s done I’ve invented, so I’m not impressed,” Shaquille O’Neal said. “For me to get my eyes wide open about another big man, he’ll have to do something that I haven’t seen before or something that I haven’t invented. Everything that he’s done, I’ve invented it.” AP/Houston Chronicle

Marion to TO?

January 17th, 2009

//
NFL Films has got a great archive of sideline microphones.  It would be great to see a transcript of what was said between Cuban and J.R.  For once, Karl is is right - Cuban is out of line and deserves to be fined by the league.

Toronto fans love J.O and what he brings them for the playoffs, but the fact of the matter is that they need someone who can finish at the rim more than any other team in the NBA right now.  Kapono shoots threes, Parker, Jose and Jamario are either too small or too dim.  Getting Marion out on the break might be what Calderon needs to push the tempo in TO and actually provide more open looks in a spread out offense.

Will Larry Brown make Diop a star?  Better question- Is Larry Brown responsible for Theo Ratliff’s monster contract?   What has Larry Brown actually done in the NBA again?  It is so hard to remember…

While perhaps on a few team radars , why is Marbury still waiver wire fodder in fantasy leagues world-wide?   He is obviously coming back at the veteran’s minimum….is he expired?

No Vince, it was not an Air Canada flight.  That one crashed and burned long ago as you, the most overrated athlete on the planet, destroyed all good will towards you in Toronto, forcing a low-ball trade and tanking your way out of town.

Eddy, you’ve played 3 minutes of basketball in the last year.

The Cuban Missed Elbow Crisis has finally come to an end. The NBA decided to fine Mavericks owner Mark Cuban $25,000 for “improper interaction” with Nuggets players at halftime of Tuesday’s game at the Pepsi Center. Cuban walked onto the court and yelled at Nuggets guard J.R. Smith, who earlier threw an elbow that missed the face of Dallas forward Antoine Wright. Smith was not penalized for his actions. Denver Post

As Jermaine O’Neal and his troublesome right knee returned to the Toronto lineup on Friday night, perhaps no one studied the Toronto Raptors center more closely than Pat Riley. The Miami Heat president has been seriously considering a trade package for O’Neal that would send Shawn Marion to Toronto, multiple league sources said. Yet Riley first needs to see O’Neal’s progress before he’ll make the leap of faith on a trade. Yahoo

Nevertheless, O’Neal, 30, was telling league associates as recently as Friday that he believes there’s a good chance he’ll end up in Miami. “If he’s healthy,” one source close to O’Neal said Friday, “it could very well happen.” League executives say that Riley has been determined to make a deal for a center, and has had substantive talks with Toronto GM Bryan Colangelo. Yahoo

Marion’s contract, worth $17.8 this season, expires after the season, which fuels speculation. Some of the more prominent rumors have Marion being shipped to Toronto for Jermaine O’Neal, to Sacramento for Brad Miller and to Cleveland for Wally Szczerbiak and Anderson Varejao. Palm Beach Post

The Heat has already dealt with a high-mileage, no-lift O’Neal with an injury history that made his day-to-day availability and night-to-night appearances a guessing game. So is it time to go there again? By all measure, Jermaine O’Neal is available, as Toronto continues to find its way with Andrea Bargnani playing alongside Chris Bosh. And, yes, the Heat continues to lack length in the paint. South Florida Sun-Sentinel Blog

Miami’s offense doesn’t really cater to Marion’s game, because, unlike in Phoenix, where Marion was a finisher at the rim, a guy named Dwyane Wade takes care of the finishing in these parts. Miami Herald Blog

Diop (7-0, 300 pounds) has been on the Bobcats’ radar at least since the summer, when they went after him in free agency. No surprise there: Coach Larry Brown monitored Diop since he was a North Carolina recruit nine years ago. “We tried to sign him this summer,” Brown told the Observer. “How can you not like long, young shot-blockers? He can offer a presence in the lane.” Charlotte Observer

“I offer you a million dollars and you want three million and you’re the billion-dollar company?” Marbury said of the buy-out negotiations that were suspended last month. “I just don’t get it, what is it really about? If it’s personal, say it’s personal.” NBA.com

Yes, that was embattled Knicks guard Stephon Marbury sitting in the second row of Friday night’s Lakers-Orlando Magic game at Staples Center. But don’t read anything into the fact that he was siting in Jeanie Buss’ seats. “Jeanie and I are really cool,” Marbury said. “She invited me to come to the game. I wanted to come before, too. I want to be around it, I miss it.” Marbury is living in Los Angeles, working out at a facility in Manhattan Beach and hiking in Runyan Canyon near Hollywood. This is the second Lakers game he’s attended this year. The first, rather famously, came in December when he sat courtside for the Lakers-Knicks game. LA Daily News

An awestruck Vince Carter witnessed U.S. Airways Flight 1549 land in the Hudson River from his window a few hours before the Nets played at Izod Center. The shooting guard known for doing amazing things on the basketball court said what the pilot did truly was amazing. Bergen Record

The pilot’s name is Chesley B. Sullenberger III. Because of his heroism, all 155 people on board survived. “The way he landed, he landed flat,” Carter said. “It wasn’t a nosedive. He put it flat down. “The next thing you know, a couple of seconds later, you see people jumping out and a few seconds later you see people on the wing.” Bergen Record
As for whether he’s considering a countersuit against former driver David Kuchinsky, who filed suit against him Monday, Eddy Curry didn’t want to go there. “Honestly, I just want to talk about basketball. I’ll leave the legal stuff to her,” he said, referring to his attorney, Kelly Saindon. “I just want to talk about basketball right now, just really get my focus back on basketball. When people discuss the Knicks, it shouldn’t be Eddy Curry and what’s going on off the court. It should be basketball.” NY Newsday

Matrix and Magic

January 12th, 2009

//

The Suns and Magic must be seen as viable long-shots to win the NBA championship this year.  Unfortunately, Jameer Nelson is not much more than an average NBA PG, but the inside-out game of the greatest centre in the game and an arsenal of weapons from behind the arc (Lewis, Hedo, JJ and Bogans) make Orlando a tough match up.

Shawn Marion is making 20 million a year, how can a coach forget that?  There isn’t a day that goes by where Spoelstra does not joke with his wife about how much money Marion makes while brushing his teeth.  Will the Heat be content to just let that contract expire, or will we see Marion in a Cavs uniform for their playoff run?

Who doesn’t believe that Charlotte would be receptive to moving two terrible players?  For all the great he has done on the court,  Michael Jordan’s track record for personnel moves is extremely poor.  Oh wow - Matt Carroll and Adam Morisson are available - wow.  Morrison is just another example from the long list of big-time college players who just can’t transition to the NBA.  Others include Joakim Noah, Mike Conley and JJ Redick…to name a few.  Charlotte must continue to clean house and change the culture.  This is Larry Brown’s very last chance at respectability in this league…

The Kings have a bright future which will not include Brad Miller.  Who is the King that ran out of the dressing room to the backseat of his mommy’s car, following a game last year?  Was it Salmons, after his minutes had been down with Artest’s return.

//

The Magic have a league-high 14 road wins, including victories in Dallas, Portland and Utah. The win Sunday gave them a sweep of the season series with the Spurs. “We knew the team that made the stops toward the end was going to win,” Howard said. “We came up with some good stops and got a good win.”AP/Philly.com

Marion had a different spin. “He said he forgot about me,” Marion said. “He said the team that was out there, they were on a run.” Asked if he ever had been held out of an entire fourth quarter and overtime in the same game, Marion said, “No, no, no.” South Florida Sun-Sentinel

I believe team management would be very receptive to moving the contract of either Adam Morrison or Matt Carroll. Neither one starts, except as an injury fill-in, and that’s a huge financial investment in backups with redundant skill sets. The question is whether other teams would accept one of those contracts without sending a similar contract back to Charlotte. As far as attractive to other teams, the Knicks would love to acquire Diaw, but why would the Bobcats give him up? His presence has made them significantly better. Charlotte Obsever

And as a reminder, Brad Miller isn’t the only one being shopped here. The Kings are open to almost all possibilities and John Salmons - who is averaging a career-high 19 points per game on 47.6 shooting and a career-high 39.6 percent from three-point range - is near Miller on the list of available players.Sacramento Bee

Milwaukee Bucks: There have been continuous rumors forward Charlie Villanueva is being shopped and whispers about Michael Redd being dealt. Backup guard Charlie Bell’s name has also been bandied about in trade talks and it is believed some teams have contacted the Bucks about the availability of veteran small forward Richard Jefferson. Racine Journal Times

The latest rumor to surface is the Bucks possibly trading backup point guard Ramon Sessions and forward Joe Alexander, who was the eighth overall selection in last June’s NBA draft, to the Memphis Grizzlies. In return, the Bucks would obtain point guard Michael Conley Jr., who was the No. 4 overall selection in the 2007 draft. Racine Journal Times

No, Robert Horry won’t be coming back to play for the Lakers. Horry (shown at left with the Spurs) was in town Sunday night and dropped by Staples Center for the Lakers-Heat game at the urging of Rick Fox, his former Lakers teammate. Horry went on the FSN West halftime show with Fox. LA Times Blog

Horry, who became known as “Big Shot Rob” for his clutch shooting, hasn’t officially retired. But he said he has no designs on playing again. LA Times Blog

The Kings were offered Brandon Bass and Jerry Stackhouse for Ron Artest when Josh Howard was the guy they really wanted. Now, it sounds as if Howard is far more available than he was then. What’s more, the reports of a possible three-team deal with Dallas, Charlotte and Oklahoma City reminded me of a recent conversation in which I was told by a league source that the Kings were part of talks involving the Thunder (with Earl Watson in the equation) and a third team. Don’t be surprised if something eventually goes down that is a variation of some of these pieces and involves the Kings. Sacramento Bee

The Charlotte Bobcats are in ongoing trade discussions with the Dallas Mavericks, and possibly the Oklahoma City Thunder, that could move Raymond Felton and Nazr Mohammed, two NBA sources confirmed to the Observer. Some elements of a potential deal were first reported Sunday in the Boston Globe. The Observer has learned that any deal likely would include moving backup center Mohammed, who is owed about $13.3 million over the next two seasons. Charlotte Observer

If a deal is consummated, the Bobcats likely would end up with Dallas Mavericks center DeSagana Diop. They pursued Diop during free agency last summer before he re-signed with Dallas. The deal Diop signed with the Mavericks is large – four more seasons at an average salary of nearly $6.7 million. Charlotte Observer

The Charlotte Bobcats, Dallas Mavericks and Oklahoma City Thunder put the pieces in place for a three-team trade late last week, but NBA front-office sources said Sunday that those talks have gone “dormant.” Sources told ESPN.com that the full deal, as originally constructed, would have sent Raymond Felton, Nazr Mohammed and Sean May from Charlotte to Dallas, landed Earl Watson and Dallas’ DeSagana Diop with the Bobcats and shipped Jerry Stackhouse to the Thunder along with a future second-round pick. ESPN.com

It was unclear Sunday night if the trade can still be resurrected or revised, but sources say one impediment is an injury suffered in Tuesday’s victory over Boston by Bobcats rookie guard D.J. Augustin, which could suddenly make Charlotte reluctant to part with Felton. Augustin is expected to miss at least 10 days after he aggravated the abdominal injury in Saturday’s victory over Washington. ESPN.com

If the trade can be revived, Watson would be moving to Charlotte as a veteran backup to Augustin, whose emergence has led many executives around the league to presume that Felton would be moved before the league’s Feb. 19 trading deadline. Felton is playing on an expiring contract that pays him $4.1 million this season and will be a restricted free agent this summer. ESPN.com

Raymond Felton will become a restricted free agent in July. He’s having his best season as a pro; just good enough that some other NBA team might sign him to an offer sheet that would place the Bobcats in a no-win situation. Charlotte Observer

Mohammed came to the Bobcats last season from the Detroit Pistons. He will make about $6.4 million next season and nearly $6.9 million the following season, and has been on the fringe of the rotation since coach Larry Brown took over this season. Charlotte Observer

A report in Sunday’s editions of the Boston Globe cited a league source who said the Thunder is involved in a three-team trade that would send Earl Watson to the Charlotte Bobcats. The report did not indicate which player or players Oklahoma City would get in the deal, which would also send Bobcats guard Raymond Felton to Dallas and Mavs center DeSagana Diop to Charlotte. Oklahoman

General manager Sam Presti, citing team policy, declined to comment on the report when contacted Sunday afternoon. The Thunder, however, is believed to be a late third party in the deal to help make the trade work under the league’s salary cap provisions set by the collective bargaining agreement. Dallas and Charlotte could possibly proceed without the Thunder. Oklahoman

While the Celtics clearly aren’t as bad as they’ve looked lately, it may also be fair to say the roster as currently constructed isn’t what they’d like heading into the postseason. Paul Pierce believes there will be changes, and he supports the concept. “I wouldn’t be surprised if something happens,” Pierce said before his team’s 94-88 win over the Toronto Raptors. “Usually every year something happens, regardless of if your winning or you’re not playing so well. The team is always looking for ways to better itself, so it definitely wouldn’t surprise me if we made a move.” Boston Herald

“It’s kind of hard to say, but definitely you would like to get another shooter,” Pierce said. “I think that could help us. I don’t know if that’s going to be coming from a range-shooting four or a 3-point shooting 3-man, but I think we could definitely use another guy who could stretch the defense. “Right now we don’t have a lot of depth at the wing position. You see, with Tony Allen (ankle) out, we’re playing a small lineup with Gabe (Pruitt) and Eddie (House) on the court with Ray Allen at the small forward. And Ray doesn’t really play small forward.” Boston Herald

Asked about defensive issues with Allen out, coach Doc Rivers said, “We just miss another guard, really. Honestly, Tony has been an average defender for us. I’ve always said he should be a great defender; he just hasn’t been yet, and that’s something he has to improve on. But we’re just down a guard.” Boston Herald

It wasn’t a snub, Erik Spoelstra said, just a temporary deviation from his normal rotation. That’s how the Miami Heat coach summed up starting small forward Shawn Marion being held out of the entire fourth quarter and all of overtime in Friday’s victory in Sacramento. “I wasn’t planning on that at all,” Spoelstra said before Sunday’s 108-105 loss to the Los Angeles Lakers at Staples Center. It was the first time he addressed Marion’s absence. “We’ve done that several times this season and the guys have been great about it and very professional about it.” South Florida Sun-Sentinel

On offense, George Karl admitted Friday’s loss to Detroit was the first time this season that he and point guard Chauncey Billups weren’t on the same page late in the game. But in part due to the special circumstance of the opponent being Billups’ former team, Karl also said he was not concerned it might become a trend. The Nuggets, who get three full days off before Tuesday’s game against Dallas, fine-tuned things in a mostly half-court session Sunday. On offense, the team is trying to figure out what players and coaches like and what will work consistently. Denver Post

There were plenty of reasons for the Bulls to be angry following a home loss to the NBA’s worst team. Drew Gooden described how the repair work played out at Sunday’s practice. “We had a film session where we watched the last six minutes of the game and saw what we did wrong,” he said. “I think we’re going to build from this. It was nothing where we were nitpicking at every little thing and guys getting frustrated. I think the optimism around this squad was good.” Arlington Heights Daily Herald

Asked if he’s a believer in calling players-only meetings, Drew Gooden answered yes, but didn’t think the Bulls are at that point yet. “It’s no time right now to push the panic button,” he said. “Guys know what they need to do. If there’s a time when a meeting needs to be called, it will be called.” Arlington Heights Daily Herald

“It’s tough when you have your captains out,” Del Negro said. “But still when you’re a captain, no matter if you’re in street clothes or not, you have a responsibility and a respect from the players that it has to come from them. It can’t always come from me or the coaching staff. As guys take more ownership of the team and understand what leadership and work ethic are all about, guys follow suit.” Indeed, captains Kirk Hinrich and Luol Deng are out, though both practiced Sunday. Hinrich even took contact on his surgically repaired right thumb for the first time and might play Thursday or Saturday. Deng might return after missing eight games with a sprained ankle to face Portland. Chicago Tribune

So, that scenario leaves either Iverson or Hamilton to start at shooting guard. Curry, assuming everybody is healthy enough to play, could choose to go back to his smaller lineup and start all three guards, with Prince moving up to power forward. Or, he could bring Hamilton or Iverson off the bench. Hamilton has made it known he has no interest in coming off the bench, nor does Iverson. So you can see Curry’s dilemma. Curry has elected not to talk about it until Hamilton is officially back and ready to play. Detroit News

Among the many things Shaquille O’Neal likes to take credit for is the construction of Staples Center, which was completed after his third season with the Lakers. As he yelled to Snoop Dogg in Shaq’s first game back with the Miami Heat, “I built this [expletive]!” It was hard to escape Shaq’s legacy at Staples Center on Sunday. He was in town with the Phoenix Suns to play the Clippers in the afternoon game, and the evening featured a matchup of his former teams, the Lakers and Miami Heat. When I reminded Shaq of this unique confluence he went around the Suns locker room shaking hands as if he’d just won an award. If it’s rare for such a superstar to play for four teams (can it really be almost 13 years since he left Orlando?) it might be an even greater oddity that none of the four is a guarantee to retire his jersey when he’s done. ESPN.com

So where would Shaq prefer to have his giant jersey hang? “Hopefully it’ll be here,” he said, walking through the hallway in Staples Center. “I was part of the greatest one-two punch in Laker history. Hopefully they still remember that. “In a perfect world, I have four teams, I’d be the first guy standing there with all four jerseys, number retired in all four places. It’s not something I really think about. If I had my first wish, it would be here. Because when I first came here, I made the statement I would love to have my name next to Kareem and those greats.” ESPN.com

Knicks president Donnie Walsh sounded off yesterday, saying he’s unhappy with the Knicks’ season spinning out of control, but has no regrets about Nov. 21’s landmark deals that cleared cap space for 2010. In a state-of-the-Knicks address, Walsh did not sound anxious to make another trade as a quick fix or to shake things up, wanting to evaluate the pieces over an 82-game schedule. NY Post

Because of his imposed restrictions, Walsh indicated it being doubtful he’ll make a trade by the Feb. 19 deadline. The only way he’ll make a trade is if he gains a solid player who markedly upgrades the roster and one whose contract does not extend past 2010. That may be too much of a heist to pull off, with the Clippers in no rush to trade Marcus Camby. NY Post

But Walsh seems more concerned with evaluations to determine whom to get rid of this summer. Slumping Nate Robinson and David Lee are restricted free agents - and Walsh can match any team’s offer. Walsh will listen to offers for Lee at the deadline, but would want a lot of talent back and not one with a contract past 2010. Dumping injured-again Eddy Curry’s contract (he reportedly was recently offered to Miami for Shawn Marion and rejected) seems like a lost cause, considering he’s battling a weight problem. NY Post

“I don’t know what I can live with until I get to the end of the year,” Walsh said. “I don’t want to be making those kinds of statements in the middle of the season … I want to see the whole season. I want to see what players basically can contribute as we go forward. Those are the things I’m looking at.” NY Newsday

Walsh figures to be active before the Feb. 19 trade deadline, but more likely to move more salary (Eddy Curry) off the 2010-11 payroll. “You’re always both” a buyer and a seller, Walsh said, but the Knicks surely will be frugal. “If I can get a good player, I’d like to do that,” he said. “But I don’t want to interfere with two years from now. That’s one thing I’ve been pretty consistent with. And to a degree, it would have to be somebody that can help us. It can’t be just another guy.” NY Newsday

Skepticism about Elton Brand remains alive and well in Philadelphia, at least among fans and the media. As in: When Brand returns to the active roster, can the 76ers continue to run as effectively as they have been? As in: Can he return playing anywhere close to the level that brought him his 5-year, $79.8 million free-agent contract? Let it be noted that Mike Woodson, the Atlanta Hawks’ coach, shares none of those concerns. “Trust me, don’t throw Brand out the door, my man, because he’s going to help your basketball team win a lot of games, I promise you that,” Woodson was saying before yesterday’s game against the Sixers. The Sixers are 6-6 without Brand, who is rehabilitating from a dislocated right shoulder and is likely still more than week away from returning. Without him, they have led the NBA in fastbreak scoring, including advantages of 29-9 and 20-4, respectively, over the Houston Rockets and the Charlotte Bobcats. Philadelphia Daily News

Dwight Howard scored 24 points, Jameer Nelson had eight of his 22 in the final two minutes, and the Magic beat the Spurs 105-98 on Sunday night. Hedo Turkoglu added 21 points for the Magic (30-8), who are tied with the Boston Celtics and Los Angeles Lakers for the NBA lead in victories. Orlando has won four straight and 13 of 15. “It feels good,” Howard said. “We’ve been playing great basketball, but to come here and beat a great San Antonio team says a lot about our growth and maturity.” AP/Philly.com

Nuggets guard Anthony Carter does not like to miss games for any reason. It’s a large part of why he has been playing through a hip injury that won’t completely go away. “In the last week I’ve been getting treatment, and I feel great,” Carter said. According to Carter, he first injured the hip in training camp, but the pain subsided. However, as Carter compensated for a recent groin injury, he aggravated the hip. Denver Post

Nets: But now, Ryan Anderson is healthy, Yi Jianlian isn’t (broken pinkie) and the rookie will make his first career start tonight when the Nets look for a fourth straight win at home. They’ll greet former Net Nenad Krstic and the Thunder - while welcoming Devin Harris back from a hamstring injury that KO’d him for 3½ of the last four games. Anderson replaces Yi, who is out 4-6 weeks. “I’m just going to come in like every other game I’ve played,” said Anderson, who went for an MRI on his back Saturday - no damage was found. “I’m going to just try and be a rebounder, a hustle guy and try and get some easy points. That’s kind of my strategy, if I have one.” NY Post

The sight of Al Horford limping off the floor in Orlando Friday night didn’t give anyone cause for major concern. He walked off the floor under his own power. Did the same on his way out of the locker room. But now comes word that he’ll be out indefinitely with a bone bruise in his right knee. Talk about news you don’t want if you’re the Hawks or a Hawks fan. Horford’s absence from the starting lineup and playing rotation will be felt far beyond his 10.8 points, a team-high 8.7 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 1.6 blocks. Atlanta Journal Constitution Blog

A light smattering of boos accompanied the Hawks as they left the floor for the locker room at the end of Sunday’s ugly 109-94 whipping at the hands of the Philadelphia 76ers. Hawks captain and All-Star Joe Johnson said it was an appropriate end to 48 minutes that he had trouble describing after the Hawks (22-14) dropped their third straight game without putting up much of a fight. Atlanta Journal Constitution

“We’re in a rut right now,” said Hawks coach Mike Woodson, who was without starting center Al Horford on Sunday and will be without him for the foreseeable future. Horford is out indefinitely with a bone bruise in his right knee.” Atlanta Journal Constitutio

Ray Allen earned season-highs of 36 points and eight 3-pointers during the Celtics’ 94-88 victory over the Raptors yesterday at Air Canada Centre. The Celtics (30-9) finally reached the 30-win mark after losing four games in a row and seven of the 10. The Celtics have beaten the struggling Raptors (16-22) seven of the past eight meetings and face them again tonight at TD Banknorth Garden. “We’d like for people to think we’re down, but we are not,” Allen said. “We just hit a bad hitch in the road.” Boston Globe

Allen entered the game having not surpassed 20 points in 11 contests. The 12-year veteran, who had missed 24 of 30 3-pointers in the previous four games, was knocked out of his usual pregame shooting ritual because of the early (12:30 p.m.) start time. Allen typically gets to the arena about four hours before a game to shoot before most of the other players show up. “It felt awkward to me,” Allen said. “Normally I would get to the gym and shoot all the time that we started our meeting at the hotel. Twelve-thirty games are tough for us.” Boston Globe

Paul Pierce suffered a right knee injury in the first quarter after banging knees with teammate Brian Scalabrine. But despite the pain that has his status for tonight’s game up in the air, Pierce went off a hard screen set by Garnett on Moon to nail a 20-foot pull-up jumper to give Boston a 90-83 lead and seal the much-needed win. “It was an open shot,” said Pierce, who had 11 points in 41 minutes. “Kevin set the pick. I came off of it. I’m going to take the shot regardless to how I feel. I’m on the court and I’m trying to help my team win.” Boston Globe

The Celtics were without starting center Kendrick Perkins and guard Tony Allen during their 94-88 win here yesterday. Forward Paul Pierce is uncertain whether he will play tonight against Toronto in Boston because of an aggravation of a right knee injury. Guard Rajon Rondo, who has been hampered by a shoulder injury, also is expected to play after suffering scratches on his legs when he fell into the crowd. Boston Globe

“Scal fell into it - the knee that’s been sore for the last few weeks, the same one I hyperextended,” Pierce said. “It’s just a little sore. I aggravated it a little bit, but I was getting treatment after the game and I’ll see how it feels (today). Hopefully it’ll get better overnight. “I was a little ginger on it for most of the game after I got the hit, but I just wanted to be out there to help my team.” Boston Herald

Bargnani on the block?

January 8th, 2009

//
Bargnani was Toronto’s first ever no.1 overall draft pick and trading him for a guy who can’t stay quiet during the national anthem or drive and watch porn at the same time - is ridiculous.  Agreed that TO needs a an athletic wing presence who can flat-out score, but the Italian is still so young…  Who knows… maybe Chris Bosh ends up with the Lakers?   A) We know he loves the spotlight of film production (given his YouTube campaign last year)… and B) we also know that Phil Jackson loo-oo-oves him.  If such a move to Hollywood were to happen for Bosh, Caesar Colangelo could suddenly surround Bargnani with a supporting cast that could compliment his unique lightening quick catch and release game.  The real question is why a  7 footer,  shooting from behind the arc, needs to have the quickest release in the NBA?

Will Hinrich return to his form of 2 years ago?  In a backcourt where everybody thinks they are a starter, including contract year Gordon and ROY lock Rose… where does Hinrich reallllly fit?  Gordon or Rose has got to sit down with a phantom injury,  let Paxson showcase Hinrich to the league and then ship him.

Camby can flat out rebound.  The only reason Denver let him go the way they did was to uncork the freak madess that is Nene.  Along with JR Smith draining trips and the Birdman altering shots with  2+blocks per, Denver’s depth will be showcased over the rest of January, as Carmelo looks on in a fine-knit suit.

QUESTION: When Mullin and Nelson share an elevator, do they make small talk or just look up at the little TV?
//

Monta Ellis’ surgically repaired left ankle is closer to being like new. Warriors coach Don Nelson said before the game that Ellis was at “80-85 percent.” Ellis put up shots for about 15 minutes after the Warriors’ pregame warm-ups. Chris Mullin, executive vice president of basketball operations, and team president Robert Rowell sat on the bench together and watched. Contra Costa Times
Certainly, the Knicks covet Camby. Except for the discounted-Denver Nuggets, who donated him to my Paper Clips for a potential trade of second-round picks, name a team in business to win that wouldn’t want a radical rebounder devoted to playing defense and can’t be ignored on offense. NY Post

Kirk Hinrich, who participated in the non-contact portion of practice Wednesday, could be back by next week. Luol Deng, who has missed six games with a sprained left ankle, also practiced, and coach Vinny Del Negro said he expects Deng to play Friday against Washington. Chicago Sun-Times
I don’t begrudge anybody throwing out a trade rumor that makes sense. But the one floated about Josh Howard going to Toronto for Andrea Bargnani and Anthony Parker has zero chance of happening. A couple of good NBA insiders have suggested time would be better spent taking a nap today than chasing that bit of speculation. Dallas Morning News Blog

The Mavericks, like every team in the league, will be linked to trade rumors for the next 40 days or so before the trading deadline. They are not believed to be on the brink of any movement at this point, although they continue to get calls regarding Jerry Stackhouse. Dallas Morning News

The league office confirmed to Yahoo! Sports that the six preseason games that Miles played for the Boston Celtics counts toward the 10. Before the Memphis Grizzlies waived him on Tuesday night to avoid guaranteeing his contract for the rest of the season, Miles played two regular-season games that pushed him to eight total. Yahoo

Any team in the NBA simply can sign Miles to a 10-day contract, play him twice and punch out one of the summer’s top free-agent destinations. The Blazers are a prime destination for free agents, and the cap space also made them a fierce competitor for sign-and-trade deals. If Miles returns to the salary cap, he also will push Portland into the luxury tax. That means every team under the tax would benefit with about $250,000 of revenue sharing from Portland. Yahoo

One West GM thinks the Denver Nuggets, who moved under the luxury tax threshold on Wednesday, will be motivated to sign Miles. Another GM wondered whether the Blazers might pick Miles off waivers and just keep him on the bench, although it’s unlikely the NBA would allow that. Yahoo
nba rumors

The Raptors made a cost-cutting move yesterday, trading seldom-used guard Hassan Adams to the Los Angeles Clippers for “cash considerations” and a future second-round pick. That should clear up any issue of the team going over the NBA’s luxury tax, which Toronto exceeded by signing forward Jake Voskuhl before Christmas. Toronto Sun

It’s not believed the departure of Adams sets the stage for something bigger for general manager Bryan Colangelo, at least for now, though the Raptors certainly have room to add bodies. They were down to nine last night with the loss of Adams and injuries. They have 13 men overall, including the inactive Nathan Jawai. Toronto Sun

So the choice became Adams –a player the team liked, but who would need some time to learn the system — or Jones, who had played well for them before hurting his foot on Sunday and being waived Monday. The Clippers chose Fred Jones. The team is expected to sign him to a 10-day contract in the morning and he should be on the court tommorrow night. LA Daily News

For the moment, Jawad Williams’ hometown fairy tale is over. The Cavaliers released the rookie forward Wednesday, but there’s a chance it may not be permanent. The Cleveland native and former St. Edward star made the team after a good training camp performance. This Friday, however, his contract would have become guaranteed for the rest of the reason and it would have limited the Cavs’ roster flexibility. Cleveland Plain Dealer

With the Nuggets accomplishing two goals in one swoop Wednesday, don’t be surprised if they make another trade by the Feb. 19 deadline. The Nuggets acquired reserve center Johan Petro and got enough under the luxury-tax line to finish the season there. Next could be a bigger-name player to help the playoff push. “I think the window of opportunity to maybe try to make a trade that will impact our team has gotten better because of being under the tax line,” coach George Karl said. Rocky Mountain News

Chucky Atkins is making $3.24 million and Petro $1.94 million. The cash sent covers the prorated difference. The Thunder could take back a bigger salary because it has a $3.26 million trade exception. Denver moved slightly under the $71.15 luxury-tax line with Monday’s trade of Cheikh Samb, but there remained the likelihood of player bonuses pushing it back over the line. The Nuggets should get about $3 million in the summer from a league pool. Rocky Mountain News

“I have mixed feelings,” said Atkins, 34. “I had a good time with my guys in Denver, and I hate to leave. … But they’ve got a young guard (Russell Westbrook) in Oklahoma City that needs to be taught.” Rocky Mountain News

You do not need a source to know infinitely more than those claiming to have inside info purporting a possible three-way trade involving the Knicks, Clippers and Trail Blazers. All that’s required is a trace of common sense to grasp L.A. isn’t about to relinquish Marcus Camby or vaguely covet Quentin Richardson, whereas Portland already has a fairly decent power forward in LaMarcus Aldridge and thus has no major use or spare cap space after this season for David Lee. NY Post

While I would not fault New York for trying to pawn off Richardson on Mike Dunleavy (or others) had the insulting notion been so much as floated, it shows the petty respect authors of such gobbledygook-for-toddlers have for the once South Carolina student-of-the-game under Frank McGuire and Donnie Walsh. NY Post

Raef LaFrentz’ $12.722 million expiring contract is very much in demand because his insurance will return $5M of the remaining $6M. Would exchanging him for a marquee scorer with a massive long-term liability merely mean crashing the afterparty - one and done, as Pau Gasol’s Grizzlies in three straight sweeps - or translate into making a bigger indentation? The NBA deadline to waive players with non-guaranteed contracts is Saturday, but Lindsey Hunter and Michael Ruffin aren’t going anywhere. A source said the Bulls have decided to keep both players, guaranteeing their deals for the rest of the season. Hunter, 38, has proved to be the veteran contributor, leader and mentor the team hoped for when it coaxed him out of retirement from the Detroit Pistons on Nov. 13 to help fill the void after Kirk Hinrich underwent thumb surgery. Chicago Sun-Times

Hunter declined to say whether he knew if the Bulls had decided to keep him. ”I don’t really worry about all that,” he said. ”I just do what I do. I enjoy every day. I love playing; I love working out. I just have fun. I’m an older guy, but I still enjoy what I do. As long as I can do that, I’m OK.” Chicago Sun-Times

Ruffin would be owed an injury settlement if he’s waived — he has yet to play after spraining his left ankle in the preseason and suffering ensuing Achilles soreness — so the Bulls want to get some return on their investment. Chicago Sun-Times
In the fourth quarter, Josh Howard committed a clear-path foul against Mardy Collins, giving him two free throws that he made and the Clippers the ball again. Even though they turned it over right away, it was still a poor decision. These lapses in concentration do not go unnoticed. “We’ve had two bad games in a row,” Jason Terry said. “We were fortunate to get away with a win.” So, is focus the problem? “That’s part of it,” he said. Dallas Morning News

Officially, Lamar Odom is said to be day-to-day. Wednesday was not his day, however. Friday might not be his day, either. Odom suffered a bone bruise in his right knee, the results of an MRI performed Wednesday revealed. He did not play against the Golden State Warriors and it’s uncertain whether he can play Friday against the Indiana Pacers. LA Daily News

Odom’s return is a mystery. “Have you ever had a bone bruise?” Phil Jackson asked a reporter during his pregame session. “It takes a while (to heal). It’s a tough one. We’re still not out of the woods with this just because of that diagnosis. We’ll use other guys.” LA Daily News

Heat guard Daequan Cook feared the worst when he bumped knees earlier this week with San Antonio center Kurt Thomas on Monday. Cook was relieved to learn that the injury to his left knee was minor and it isn’t expected to keep him out of the lineup for long. Cook missed his first game of the season Wednesday against Denver because of a bruised left knee. Miami herald

But Cook is expected to return as soon as Friday at Sacramento. An MRI exam on Cook’s knee did not reveal any structural damage, coach Erik Spoelstra confirmed Wednesday. ”It was just a bruise, but where he had the bruise, it’s tough to get the swelling out,” Spoelstra said. Miami herald

Forward James Jones, who has yet to play this season after wrist surgery in October, said he expects to make his debut either Friday against the Kings or on Sunday against the Lakers. Jones is scheduled to participate in his first extended team scrimmage without limitations during the Heat’s practice Thursday in Sacramento. Miami herald

After effortlessly knocking down jumpers, Ellis visited team doctor John Belzer for a check-up. Belzer deemed Ellis, who underwent a strength test Tuesday, ready to advance to the “end stage” of his rehabilitation. This next level for Ellis will include more strenuous running and sprinting, various jumping-related exercises and “other elements related to increasing his explosiveness and power,” according to a news release by the team. Contra Costa Times

Swingman Stephen Jackson, projected to miss two to four weeks with a strained right hamstring, said he’s already feeling better. “I won’t be out that long,” he said at the morning shoot-around. Contra Costa Times

On Sean Williams: “He’s getting what he wanted,” the NBA official scout said, “and he’s not exactly helping them out. I feel sorry for their team, because he’s hurt them since he got there.” Williams is averaging 6.3 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 4.3 blocks in 20.7 minutes. Neither Rod Thorn nor Kiki Vandeweghe are at the Showcase, where every D-League team plays two games over four days. Newark Star-Ledger
MS: “Where is your relationship with Don Nelson right now?” Anthony Randolph: “It’s a player-coach relationship. It’s all it is right now.” MS: Are you frustrated? Anthony Randolph: “Of course. I want to play. I’ve played my whole life and I feel I can do things to help the team. And I feel I’ve shown I can do things to help the team. So, of course I’m frustrated.” MS: “Are you leaning on anybody?” Anthony Randolph: “Coach (Keith) Smart, Corey (Maggette), Jack (Stephen Jackson) … all the veteran guys are helping me a lot.” San Francisco Examiner

MS: “Does it upset you that people say you’re not NBA-ready?” Anthony Randolph: “I don’t pay attention to that. Of course, I know I’m NBA ready because the games I’ve played in, and in my minutes I’ve shown that.” MS: “Are you aware that you’re a topic of conversation among fans. Some say you should be playing; others say you haven’t earned it yet.” Anthony Randolph: “No, I really don’t do the media like that. I just try to stay focused on the basketball part, the part I can control.” San Francisco Examiner
