All-Star weekend and the Garden

February 15th, 2009

//Recent performances at the Garden have cemented its reputation as the greatest basketball court in the world.  There is little question that every player in the NBA would welcome a move to NY at some point in their career.  The question however is whether a free agent is willing to leave 30 million dollars on the table in a max contract with their native club?  Solution?  Do the Vince!   Get your native team to max you out, start telling your opponent what plays you are running, get your mom a plush parking spot with the players, fly into the country just before tip-off of the biggest playoff game of your team’s existence,  and then force a trade by not trying anymore.
The difference between Coaches K and D is pretty enormous.  Duke plays with a discipline which allows it to compete on any night with any team.  It has been proven in recent Olympics, that some of those international teams must be taken seriously, and any USA team will require that discipline.  If Lebron and Bosh are in New York in 2010 and win a title… maybe.
In order to truly gauge Vince’s value, you need only speak to the fans in Toronto.  He has also been voted as the most over-rated player in the league, by his peers.  It is surprising that the Spurs would be interested in Vince, especially for the playoffs?

Could Shaq finish the season with the Lakers?  If he did, they would win the title.  The real question however is how things in Phoneix have gotten so bad so fast… that everybody wants out?  Is it Porter?  Is it Kerr?  Maybe it’s Nash?

Sounding like a man with a plan, LeBron James hopes to join forces with fellow All-Star Chris Bosh when the pair become free agents in 2010. The only question is, where? Friday, James didn’t exactly disagree with the idea that he and Bosh could wind up in New York. “I would definitely love to play with Chris Bosh,” James said during the Eastern Conference All-Star team’s media session. “Being around him last summer (in the Olympics), I got to see how smart he is. His basketball IQ is unbelievable. He’s a very, very good player.” NY Daily News

“I don’t know. … I don’t know,” James said, chuckling, when asked about a scenario that would bring him and Bosh to the Garden. “I’m very happy with the team I’m on right now. We’re playing great basketball. The Cavaliers have been great to me. So I have no reason to even think about leaving, right at this point.” NY Daily News
U.S. basketball managing director Jerry Colangelo told The Post David Lee is on his radar as a 2012 Olympian and said Mike D’Antoni would be considered as Team USA head coach if Duke’s Mike Krzyzewkski passes. Colangelo said Lee likely will be invited this July to Las Vegas after summer league as part of a 24-player pool of young standouts “to keep the pipeline going.” Colangelo will select from that young group a roster for the 2010 World Championships. NY Post

The Pistons are among a handful of teams interested in acquiring All-Star Amare Stoudemire from Phoenix, which is asking for at least one expiring contract. Detroit can deliver Rasheed Wallace and his $13.68 million contract that comes off the books this summer. Michigan Live
What’s somewhat surprising, though, according to league sources, is that the leading team in the hunt to acquire Carter is one that would not seem to be a natural fit: San Antonio. “They would have to package a lot of salaries,” an Eastern Conference team official said. “But as long as they don’t have to give up any of their Big Three (Tim Duncan, Manu Ginobili and Tony Parker), it seems like that’s the most likely spot for Vince.” Sporting News
According to various league officials and player agents at the scene, the Nets have spoken to numerous teams to gauge Carter’s value, but the most likely scenario — as of Friday night — was a complicated 4-for-1 deal with San Antonio that would bring back two young pieces and two players the Nets would probably let go. In this scenario, which was reported last Friday on NJ.com, sharp-shooter Roger Mason and rookie point guard George Hill would come to New Jersey, along with center Fabricio Oberto and Bruce Bowen. Newark Star-Ledger

The NBA’s Rules and Competition Committee met Friday and approved a rule change that would disallow baskets if it was determined after the play that the team scoring the basket had six men on the court, CBSSports.com has learned. The NBA Board of Governors will vote on the recommendation next week, and if approved by owners, the rule will be implemented for the rest of this season. CBS Sports

The change was brought to the attention of the committee – comprised of current and former general managers, coaches, and players – in response to a game Dec. 30 in which Portland scored a basket with six men on the court against Boston. Under the old rule, the referees were permitted to assess a technical foul, but couldn’t disallow the basket. The technical foul will still be assessed, but any points scored while the extra man was on the court will be taken off the scoreboard. CBS Sports

Amare Stoudemire thinks he is going to be traded. But he can’t be 100 percent sure. “I would say it’s 60-40,” Stoudemire said Friday afternoon. “Who knows? They might keep me.” Stoudemire wore a mischievous smile as he spoke of the Suns keeping him, seeming to indicate that he’d be pretty surprised if he were not moved by Thursday’s trading deadline. Sporting News

But, later, Stoudemire explained that the Suns’ choice of direction did not make sense to him. “I don’t understand it,” he said. “They’re doing this because they want to fix the team. So you’re talking about trading a young All-Star big man. How is that rebuilding? There seems to be two different directions here. Is it about money? Or is it about making the team better?” Sporting News

In Toronto, the Raptors repeatedly have denied that they’d consider trading big man Chris Bosh. But, Bosh says, he is well aware of the chatter. “Of course you hear things,” Bosh said. “But I like talking about basketball. I don’t like talking about trades and free agency and all of that. I am just not interested.” Sporting News

Amare Stoudemire’s agent: “I feel he’s a (maximum-salary) player,” Grantham said. “A place that may be a real good deal for them may not be the best place for us. In that case, we would not be interested in signing an extension. I would think most teams would not want to rent him for a year and a half. They would want him to sign for more years and know that he’s interested in staying.” Arlington Heights Daily Herald
When told of Jackson’s comments, O’Neal laughed heartily and said, “He’s right,” then sent another compliment Jackson’s way. “He (Jackson) was great. He let us do what we did. His thing was, we’re winning and we won the championship, so he’s not going to mess with it. That’s what it was about.” There is a chance of course, this is just another marketing campaign. Or, that Jackson was a bit weary from the Lakers’ recent travels. He was never wild about the idea of having to be part of the party during this four-day break, after all. LA Daily News
Oklahoma City’s Kevin Durant scored a Rookie Challenge-record 46 points to lead the NBA’s sophomores to a 122-116 victory over the rookies on Friday night. Durant shattered the record of 36 set by Phoenix’s Amare Stoudemire as a sophomore in 2004. Durant helped hold off a late charge by the rookies with a three-point play, an emphatic dunk and two free throws in the final minutes. AP/San Francisco Chronicle
A 17-point play in a boys basketball game in Sacramento was erased this week after the league heard an appeal and agreed that the referees in the game had assessed too many technical fouls and awarded too many free throws. Ahead by 5 points in the game’s final seconds, Bella Vista High School appeared to have the game won. But a flagrant foul on a player from Rio Americano High School with 12.3 seconds left sent players and coaches from both teams’ benches onto the floor. NY Times

Steve Assburner

February 11th, 2009

//

Just read this attack on Amare article, by big Steve Aschburner over at CNNSI.com; what a fool.    Listen Steve; Amare Stoudamire  is a stud of a baller.  You saying anything otherwise simply exemplifies how difficult it must be for these young talented players to deal with know-it-all old guys like yourself in management.  The guy is literally averaging over a Steal and a Block a game.  He is a big man that can shoot free throws.  He averages over 20 points per…and oh… just 8 rebounds.  Why don’t you go sniff around some GMs for their take on where the game of basketball currently is.  This league has passed you by!
Mr. Brown, you did get LeRobbed on that called.  It is a tough one to take, but you must remember that many referees are in pursuit of the coveted 6th man of the year award.  Look at all the phone calls Timmy and his officiating pals made over the course of the season.  You know what they talk about, don’t you?  BTW, it is a good think you don’t care if you get fined… because you are going to get fined.
Harrington is an absolute me-first athlete, but it is nice to see him reaching out to the youth around the league.  Lessons in deflection are always easy to pass along.  Question: How many times has Nellie watched Blue Chips?   In a follow-up performace, you just know that Nick Nolte would make a great Don Nelson in any direct-to-DVD movie.
Mo Williams, from the small-market Cavs, is in the all-star game.  Who the heck is Mo Williams?

Cavaliers coach Mike Brown stormed out of the locker room and launched a tirade against NBA official Joey Crawford in the wake of his team’s wild 96-95 loss to the Indiana Pacers on Tuesday night in Canseco Fieldhouse. Although Brown did not call Crawford by name, he was incensed over a foul Crawford called on LeBron James with .1 of a second left that sent All-Star Danny Granger to the line for what turned out to be the game-winning free throw. It was the first time this season the Cavs lost back-to-back games. Cleveland Plain Dealer

Brown alleged that after referee Bennie Adams called Granger for a foul on James on an inbounds play with .4 of a second left that allowed James to make two free throws and tie the score at 95, Crawford responded by deliberately calling a foul on a similar play on the other end. Cleveland Plain Dealer

“I don’t care if I get fined,” Brown said. “It is what it is. I saw the two plays. It was a bad call. He determined the outcome of the game. If they want to fine me for telling the truth, they can fine me for telling the truth.” Cleveland Plain Dealer

Harrington: “I talk to B-Wright every once in a while. I just tell him to keep his head, try to stay positive and try to weather this Nellie Storm. Because he’s been known to, you know, ruin guys’ careers. So hopefully that won’t happen to those guys.” Contra Costa Times
In Philadelphia on Monday, 76ers forward Reggie Evans called Suns guard Steve Nash the “brain of the NBA.” But the team needs a pulse. “If he’s the brain, I must be the heart, huh?” Suns forward Amaré Stoudemire said. The Suns can use some heart right now, whether it is from Stoudemire or shown in a hearty finish to their past month of erratic play. Arizona Republic

3 Stooges: Buford, Paxson and Avery

February 10th, 2009

//

Buford, you are a great GM and have built a model of international scouting and team-building that is copied league-wide, but please understand this - Vince Carter is not a winner.  If you acquire him from the Nets, you will crush any hope you have of getting out of the West.  Poll your players, they will not want him around.  His stats come from being on bad teams that defer to a guy willing to take shots.

Paxson, if the Suns are open to that package and you have not offered it to them officially, you should be dragged through the streets of Chicago naked.  Have you seen Amare run the pick and roll?  You have too many good players and need a really good player, like Amare, especially as you push into the playoffs.  Tyrus Thomas is very athletic.  He could be a great competitor in several sports, but is he half as offensively gifted on the basketball court as Amare?  Go start Amare, Hinrich, Rose, Deng and Nocioni and understand what an inside out game is all about.  You made your entire Chicago career behind the arc, John, why are you so reluctant to empower others to do the same?

 Avery “Pinball Johnson, stop being such a loud mouth.  Your spouting off has gotten old, and active players have tuned you out.  There is no doubt that Amare has problems with authority.  He has undoubtedly been exploited as a basketball man-child since he was a boy.  He may very well be a bad locker room guy, but his disrespect is likely aimed at authority, not his athletic peers.  It could be that Porter is handing over too much authority to Nash, and Amare feels stupid as a result.  Regardless, have you seen this guy run the pick and roll?
Paxson, did you pause the VCR and hear what Derrick Rose said about Amare?  What is it with you NBA GMs, afraid to make trades this year?  We are talking about Amare!

The Spurs will be watching Vince Carter closely for another reason: Sensing an opportunity to grab a fifth title with the Lakers experiencing some injury problems, the Spurs recently called the Nets to inquire about Carter’s availability. A deal would be extremely difficult to make, however, because among those players San Antonio is making available, the Nets have interest in only Roger Mason — now arguably the game’s top 3-point shooter, and one of its best closers — and backup point guard George Hill. Newark Star-Ledger

It appears the Suns are open to a package of Thomas, Thabo Sefolosha, Drew Gooden, Cedric Simmons and undetermined draft picks for Stoudemire. One question now is whether better offers will come at the Suns in the days leading up to the Feb. 19 trade deadline. Arlington Heights Daily Herald Blog

Raptors GM Bryan Colangelo very publicly has proclaimed he isn’t trading Chris Bosh, who is due to become a free agent in summer 2010, along with LeBron James and Dwyane Wade. San Francisco Chronicle
The Bulls are far from the only team talking to the Phoenix Suns about a deal for Amare Stoudemire. The Golden State Warriors haven’t hidden their interest, and the New Jersey Nets admitted their talks with the Suns were unproductive. Bulls general manager John Paxson declined to comment on Stoudemire. Chicago Sun-Times

“I heard (ESPN analyst) Avery Johnson say one time that I was a bad locker-room guy or whatever,” said Amare Stoudemire, who also named ESPN analyst Tim Legler. “That’s total BS. We get along so well outside the locker room. We hang out with each other probably more than any team in the league as far as camaraderie, as far everyone hanging out together. We try to enjoy ourselves.” Arizona Republic
Count Derrick Rose among those enthused by the possibility of Phoenix Suns power forward Amare Stoudemire joining the Bulls. “Of course, anybody would want him,” Rose said following Monday’s practice at the Berto Center. “He could go anywhere, but if he comes here, we’ll love him. Great player, great teammate, plays hard, a force on the inside. So he’d be a good fit.” Arlington Heights Daily Herald

Stephen A. Smith calls out Bosh

February 2nd, 2009

//
What do the Raptors really have at this point.

1 )Rich ownership in a mega-city that is  proven to pay top dollar to show up  watch mediocre teams dissapoint,
2) a 4-time all-star PF who could fetch top value on the current  trade market
3) a European-minded coaching staff and  Jose Calderon
4) an executive pedigree bred in the most exciting run-and-gun bball system since Magic and Worthy ran Showtime in LA,
5) a young Italian who continues to improve and a likely trip to this year’s draft lottery

It is clear that Stephen A. Smith is insecure about the commonality of his first and last name, and likely over-compensates with his over-the-top antics on-air, but his calling out of Bosh is not entirely without merit.

The Lakers made a serious push into the bride’s maid position last year,  without Bynum, and are perhaps the deepest team in the league.   With role players like Luke Walton and Radmonovic ready to pick up the slack, how much will they miss the young big?  Kobe may need to start scoring more; We’ll see how he responds in the box score…

//

Results of an MRI on Andrew Bynum’s right knee showed a tear of the medial collateral ligament, it was announced today. Bynum, who suffered the injury early in the first quarter of Saturday’s victory over Memphis after having scored seven of the Lakers’ first 13 points, will be out approximately 8-12 weeks. The MRI was performed Sunday at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York and Bynum was examined this afternoon by Dr. David Altchek. InsideHoops.com
The apparently non-issue arose Sunday when ESPN entertainer Stephen A. Smith boldly stated that the 24-year-old Bosh had told team officials he was leaving in a season and a half, not even citing anonymous sources. It brought a quick denial today from both Bosh and Colangelo. “It was a surprise to me and I can’t be responsible for what other people say so …,” said Bosh, his voice trailing off in disgust. “I understand people are entitled to an opinion but making stuff up? We can’t do that. “Let’s all be fair.” Toronto Star
But what Chris Bosh says he’s seeing too often is the lack of energy in the building having a detrimental effect on the team. “The energy in the building isn’t good,” Bosh said. “We get down a little bit and everybody is like: ‘Oh my God, everything is in a shambles’ and I think we feed off of that too much. We can’t pay attention to that. We have to keep it right there no matter what happens and play hard.” Toronto Sun

Colangelo: “It’s a non-story. Stephen A. got a little carried away. I’ve e-mailed him to talk about it but he’s in bed with the flu. Maybe the basketball Gods have something to do with that. I don’t know where that story came from.” Globe and Mail

One rumor you hear going around with league general managers is the Heat might be in position to make a deal now to pair Bosh with Dwyane Wade and take its chances on persuading Bosh to not opt out in 2010. Those who know Bosh says he likes the idea of being the main guy, though the general consensus around the NBA is he’s nowhere near good enough to carry a team and needs to play with a star, say, like Wade. Kareem Blazing Again?

January 29th, 2009

//

Regardless of what Stefanski says publically, he has to be second guessing the Brand acquisition just a little.  The fact that his Sixers have played better in a run-and-gun game shows how important the role of GM can be in the off-season.  Signing players when they are coming off of injuries is always risky business, one need only look at the mess in Washington to see evidence of that.  The Sixers paid Brand based on the promise of his return to greatness, but what if that greatness achieved still does not fit the Igudola game?

Any JV coach will tell you that you simply can’t teach height.  Dunleavy is making a wise play in Clipperville by hanging on to these three big-men.  If Baron made it back and Eric Gordon can scale the rookie wall, this team just may surprise some people in the second half and set a tone for next season.

Mood swings have long been linked to the abuse of marijuana.   Kareem Abdul Jabar has been busted at the airport and is now breaking down Bynum’s post game in LA.  There is no way they are not taking saunas after some workouts.

 Who exactly is calling John Salmons?  What are they saying to him?  And are there not rules barring teams from interfering like that?  Stephon is a cancer.

Contrary to what some people may think and even write, Lebron to the Big Apple is not a foregone conclusion.  Bosh to Dallas is more of a likelihood.  Lebron is the best young player in the league and may very well want to show how he doesn’t have to go looking for a championship anywhere.

Do the ME8 Monta shoes come with extra reinforcement in the toes, for dragging your feet when slowing down mopeds?

You absolutely must worry about Eddy Curry’s destiny.
//

Sixers president/general manager Ed Stefanski said he does not comment on rumors, but a source familiar with the Sixers’ situation insisted that Stefanski had made no trade-related calls involving Elton Brand and that he had no interest in dealing the player he signed to a 5-year, $79.8 million contract during the summer. Brand confirmed that Stefanski had spoken to him. He seemed comfortable and at ease last night as he approached the third game of his return after missing 16 games with a dislocated right shoulder suffered Dec. 17. Philadelphia Daily News

Brand knows the Sixers signed him to be a difference-maker. “It’s a little frustrating, because that’s what I was brought here for, and it hasn’t come to fruition yet,” he said. “But we’re playing pretty well and I want to continue that, whatever it takes. There’s no doubt in my mind that I can get back to that level, to be a difference-maker. We know the way they played last year. We already know they can get to the first round [of the playoffs]. We’re trying to get further and hopefully we can do that.” Philadelphia Daily News

Marcus Camby returned from a sprained ankle to face the Bulls, while Zach Randolph (knee) and Chris Kaman (arch) still are sidelined. Healthy or not, Clippers coach and general manager Mike Dunleavy said he won’t consider dealing any of them before the Feb. 19 trade deadline. “No plans at all,” Dunleavy said before the game. “We want to see how they play together. We think they can be one of the best front lines in basketball. I think they can work well together; I just haven’t seen it happen yet.” Randolph arrived in a trade from New York on Nov. 21, but he has been out since Dec. 28. Arlington Heights Daily Herald

The NBA is reviewing the flagrant foul called against Lakers center Andrew Bynum that landed Charlotte Bobcats forward Gerald Wallace in the hospital to determine if any disciplinary action should be taken. But league officials said Wednesday that it’s common practice for the NBA to review flagrant fouls. The league could decide to do nothing, or it could fine and suspend Bynum for one game or more without pay. LA Times

In recent games, Bynum has committed several hard fouls. He fouled Cleveland’s LeBron James hard enough in game last week that the Cavaliers forward got up and glared at Bynum. Bynum wasn’t called for a flagrant foul. LA Times

But with the Feb. 19 trade deadline looming and the increasing likelihood that significant moves will be made, the air of uncertainty has certainly compounded an already morose reality for the Kings. The two players most often discussed in such scenarios – John Salmons and Brad Miller – said the prospect of being moved has certainly been on their minds. Sacramento Bee

Salmons – who waited six years of his seven-year career to become a starter, yet finds himself a key cog for the worst Kings team in franchise history to this point – said he is well aware that the Kings have made him available to other teams. He said he received numerous phone calls to that effect during the day, though he would not say from whom. Sacramento Bee

Asked if he had any desire to be traded, Salmons said: “I want whatever God wants. Wherever he wants me to be at is where I’ll be. I don’t worry about it. … If I do (get traded), I do. If I don’t, I don’t. Sacramento has been great to me, so I won’t hold no grudges.” Sacramento Bee

Now we all know that LeBron will almost certainly land in the Big Apple, where his endorsements could make even Michael Jordan’s pale in comparison, but if Bosh (the Mavs would love to bring him back to his hometown) or Wade is your consolation prize, that’s not too shabby. Fort Worth Star-Telegram

Knicks center Eddy Curry didn’t just lose his 3-year-old son’s mother to a brutal murderer - he lost a daughter, too, it was reported Wednesday night. Nine-month-old Ava Goings, who was fatally shot along with her mother, Nova Henry, was also Curry’s child, the Chicago Sun-Times reported Wednesday night. Curry has publicly admitted fathering Henry’s son, Noah, who survived the massacre last Saturday. He had long denied being Ava’s dad. NY Daily News

Citing a source familiar with the paternity case Henry lodged against Curry, the Sun-Times says DNA tests confirmed the NBA star was also Ava’s father. Based on that finding, Curry was ordered in September to increase the $6,000 in monthly child support he had been paying Henry for Noah Curry’s care to $15,000, the source said. NY Daily News
